Acupuncture Needles

The following are some FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions) about Acupuncture. If you have additional questions, please ask Michele so you will be fully informed of the benefits and risks associated with this well respected traditional approach to health care.

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a form of therapy in which fine needles are inserted into specific points on the body.

Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is generally very safe. Serious side effects are rare – less than 1 per 10,000 treatments.

Does acupuncture have side effects?
Yes, possible side effects can occur and may include the following:

  • Drowsiness occurs after treatment in a small number of patients. If affected, you should rest for a few minutes prior to the completion of your treatment.
  • Minor bleeding or bruising can occur after acupuncture
  • Pain during treatment may occur though infrequent
  • Occasionally symptoms can briefly increase after treatment. You should report this, but it is generally not considered a cause for alarm.
  • Lightheadness can occur in certain patients, especially after the first treatment. Eat a light meal prior to treatment to avoid this occurrence.

Is there anything Michele needs to know?
Prior to your acupuncture treatment, you will complete a health history questioneer regarding your past medical history. This information should also include any supplements or medications that you are presently taking or have taken in the past, any surgeries, and the location of any scars, regardless how small or old they may be. Additionally, please inform her of any of the following:

  • have a pacemaker or any other electrical implants
  • have ever experienced seizures, fainting, or light headiness
  • have a bleeding disorder
  • are taking anticoagulants or any other medication
  • have damaged heart valves or have any other particular risk of infection
  • are pregnant or possibly pregnant

Michele uses only single use, sterile, disposable needles during treatments.
